Chief found dead in Birim river

The Anyinam Township in the Eastern Region was on Sunday afternoon thrown into a state of shock when the lifeless body of Nana Atta Baah, 67, Gyaasehene of the town was found in the Birim river at the outskirt of the town barely three days after being declared lost from the house.

Sources have revealed that the chief at around 10pm on Thursday while watching a movie informed the wife that he was going to urinate but did not return.

The wife realizing that he had not returned after 30 minutes informed the elders of the town about the situation. A complaint was made to the police and search was subsequently launched by the community members and the police from Thursday evening, but to no avail.

A cocoa farmer later found the body of the chief in the Birim River. Many residents of the community trooped to the scene to have a glimpse of the shocking incident.

The cause of the deceased death is not yet known. However, mixed speculations point to psychological trauma as a result of his ill health and chieftaincy dispute in the township.

According his wife, the deceased for some time now has been threatening to leave the world.

She said sometimes the chief packed his luggage and attempted to leave the house to an unknown destination. According to the wife, he informed members of the family to talk to him.

Other speculations are also linking the death to a chieftaincy disputes which has arisen in the township with the deceased chief backing one function.

The body of the chief has been retrieved from the Birim River by the Police and deposited at Anyinam Government Hospital pending autopsy.
