DCE rejects disability unfriendly school block

Mr Alexis Adugdaa Ayamdor, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo in the Upper East Region has rejected a three-unit classroom block at Nayorigo because the contractor has failed to include designs that are disability friendly.

According to the DCE, the Assembly would only accept projects that take into consideration designs that are disability friendly and advised the local construction firm, Robert Aboor’s Enterprise, to redesign the project to make the classrooms, the urinal and the toilet facilities accessible to PWDs.

He later issued a warning to contractors, saying that the Assembly would not accept any project that failed to consider disability friendly designs.

Mr Ayamdor further warned that the Assembly would not tolerate any contractor who would execute shoddy work, adding “Value for money is one of the cardinal principles of this government and the Assembly will not hesitate to blacklist any contractor whose work does not meet specifications, standards and schedule”.

Mr Ayamdor, however, took over other completed projects at separate functions at Gorogo –Soe, Zorko-Atenseka and Nayorigo, all in the District.

They are a 6.3 kilometres spot improvement of Gorogo–Soe feeder road executed by Lampoher Engineering Company Limited valued at GH¢297,716.13, with funding from the Ghana Social Opportunity Project (GSOP), and the construction of a three-unit classroom block with its ancillary facilities at Zorko-Atenseka by Al-Ras Enterprise, a Bolgatanga-based firm, valued at GH¢96,902.23, with funding from the District Development Facility (DDF).

The DCE expressed satisfaction with the works executed and commended the contractors for their good work. He tasked the Works Department of the Assembly to ensure that the three-unit classroom block with its ancillary facilities at Zorko-Atenseka constructed by Al-Aras Enterprise was adopted as a model and replicated in other communities. He urged other contractors to visit the site to learn from the contractor.

He impressed upon the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Assembly members and the community members to endeavour to monitor ongoing projects in their communities and to offer feedback to the Assembly for redress if need be.

Mr Ayamdor assured the Assembly’s Works Department that his administration would give it the needed support to embark on regular monitoring led by himself to ensure that projects are executed properly.
