EC could have caused bloodshed - NPP

The NPP Chairman, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey says the nation could have been plunged into bloodshed had it not been the “good sense” of Ghanaians before, during and after the Supreme Court verdict.

The Chair of the opposition party, referring to the Electoral Commission (EC) in allusion said, “a bad referee spoils a good match and in a high stakes political contest, it can cause bloodshed”.

This was contained in a letter to the Council of State, requesting it to begin a process to formalise and institutionalise the process of appointing subsequent electoral commissioners and his flanks.

In a letter which began with ‘strong worded’ tone, the NPP said, “majority of the judges in the recent presidential election petition at the Supreme Court found in one area or another, misrepresentations, omissions and malpractices. We thank God for the good sense of the Ghanaian that our country did not follow the example of other countries and seek to rectify grievances through violence”.

Copies of the letter were sent to President Mahama, Vice President Amissah Arthur, ex-Presidents Rawlings and Kufuor, the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Justice.

The EC Chairman, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, has come under ‘fire’ after the Supreme Court hearing dug out obvious lack of oversight actions and other inefficiencies on his part and the EC as a whole.

Many have attributed the post-verdict peace to Ghanaians’ heed to incessant calls for peace by the Peace Council and other peace advocates as well as the acceptance of the ruling by the first petitioner, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

According to security experts, had the acceptance speech of Akufo-Addo delayed, the country would have been in a state of uncertainty with regards to security.
