Only Kufuor can stop NPP’s self-destruction

A founder member of the main opposition New Patriotic Party says only former President John Kufuor can avert a self-implosion of the party.

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe told XYZ Breakfast Show on Friday July 12, 2013 that: “...It is important a national meeting takes place headed by J. A Kufuor to see to the problems facing the party at the moment; because J.A Kufuor, I believe strongly, is the only one that can handle and bring this confusion to a resting place; I’m being very frank with you and I’m very very serious about that”, he told host of the programme, Moro Awudu.

According to him, "without that, we definitely will be destroyed; I can assure you, because if you have a party where the elderly people are not willing to talk, then we have a problem”.

As far as Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe is concerned, former President Kufuor is the “most pragmatic and experienced politician” in the NPP capable of restoring calm in the party.

His call for Mr. Kufuor's intervention comes on the heels of past and present attacks against some elders and founding fathers of the NPP, including himself.

The other targets have been Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobbey, Dr. Arthur Kennedy and Kwame Pianim.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe warns that the festering intolerance in the party must be curbed immediately to avert an implosion.

Dissenting voices within the party have tasted the venom of leaders and groups within the NPP for breaking ranks on various issues.

Kwame Pianim and Dr. Wereko-Brobbey were taken on by the rank and file of the party for disagreeing with the decision to challenge the 2012 presidential election results in Court.

Dr. Wereko-Brobbey incurred the party’s harshest wrath which resulted in his suspension for two years, after describing the NPP’s 2012 Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a “clueless” and confused witness in the ongoing election petition hearing.

Mr. Pianim, also attracted a barrage of criticism when he accused the party’s leadership of exhibiting “intellectual and mental laziness” and further admonished the NPP to show courage and confront defeat saying: “When the results of an election are announced, we should be ready to accept the results no matter how bitter...the interests of individual members and those of the party sometimes differ”.

He also said: “Until the Supreme Court reverses the declared results of the 2012 elections, all Ghanaians, including NPP members, must fully recognise President Mahama as the legitimate Head of State of the republic and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces”.

The party also fell out with Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe for accusing the NPP’s Presidential Candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of being the cause of the party’s defeat in Greater Accra.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe fears things could degenerate soon if former President Kufuor fails to intervene immediately.
