KLM to use KIA as a hub

...for a network of flights operations

The KLM Royal Dutch Airline intend to introduce a network of flight operations within the West Africa Sub-Region using the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) as a hub.

This is the first step by KLM in its bid towards connecting all the major cities within the African continent to the network. Mr Paul Gregorowilsch, Executive Director of KLM Commercial Division, said these when he addressed newsmen on the development within KLM in its drive towards customer care and product development in Accra on Friday.

He expressed delight at the expansion and rehabilitation work being undertaken at KIA.

"The KIA is gradually developing into a world class airport which would attract major international airlines." Mr Gregorowilsch said in addition to creating employment by the increase of its frequency, KLM was also assisting in promoting education and health.

He said the Airline would introduce new inter-continental flight of Boeing 777 to most of its destinations including Ghana by the year 2003. Mr Gregorowilsch said KLM was prepared to assist Ghana's 'ailing' airline in the area of technical and managerial advice as well as revenue management.

Mr Gregorowilsch, who is the country for a four-day official visit called on the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Mr Ron Schipper, KLM Area Manager, for Africa recounted the long-standing relationship between Dutch and Ghana saying "KLM had been flying to Accra for the past 40 years and had been voted the best airline for year 2001 and 2002. Present at the function was Mr Rob Westerman, KLM General Manager for West Africa.
