Markets in Accra to be closed by 6pm – AMA

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has ordered that all shops in the major markets of Accra should be closed by 6pm.

The Mayor of Accra, Dr. Oko Vanderpujie, who made the announcement at a press briefing on Monday, said the decision is one of the measures being introduced to curb the recent fire outbreaks in the markets.

Speaking to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer of the AMA, Numo Blafo, explained that the directive originated from the AMAs by-laws which have so far not been implemented.

According to him, the directive is taking effect immediately because “sometimes, after the markets have closed, you go in there and you see people loitering around. Some have even made the market some sleeping place and in the bid to curb all this, that is why this directive has been given".

About three major markets at the central business district was gutted by fire destroying goods and wares worth millions of Ghana cedis.

Following these disasters, government and the AMA have promised to ensure maximum safety in markets not only in Accra but across the country.

They have also promised to construct modern markets to prevent fire outbreaks.
