Tema Container Terminal

A $10 million Container Terminal at Tema (TCT); a privately operated container terminal jointly owned by Antrak Ghana Ltd. and SDV Ghana Ltd. is to be officially commissioned on Friday, September 6, 2002.

Developed in line with the Government of Ghana's Gateway policy, this multi-million dollar investment was established with a view towards easing the increasing congestion in the nation's seaports. It covers an area of 55,000 square metres, is paved throughout and is equipped with a range of world class terminal handling equipment. The facility has an annual throughput capacity of some 40,000 containers with storage for up to 1,600 full and 3,000 empty TEU.

Tema Container Terminal has invested heavily in its handling equipment comprising, super stackers, fork lifts, empty handlers, stripping fork lifts, terminal tractors and trailers, which are operational 24 hours a day for a rapid transfer and delivery service. TCT is also equipped with fully computerized information and accounting systems enabling immediate location of cargo within the terminal and on the spot delivery of goods.

Opened in March 2002, and the first of its kind in the sub-region, the significance of this multi-billion cedi investment cannot be overemphasized. Considering the impact of the additional container handling capacity at Tema port, the improved handling efficiency and the creation of over two hundred new jobs clearly demonstrates the immense benefits of private sector participation in the nation's development.

The new container terminal complements Ghana's growing use of containers and its prospects as a cargo hub and transit route to land locked Africa, attracting more external business through Ghanaian ports and borders. Located adjacent to the GSL x-ray scanner and only 200 metres from the Western Gate of Tema Port puts TCT at the centre of all container clearance and delivery activities.
