Melcom Needs Our Support

A FATHER of one of the deceased persons of the collapsed Melcom building disaster, Nana Kwaku Berhene, has stated that “Melcom Group cannot be blamed for the unfortunate disaster.”

Nana Berhene, who is the Asantehene’s Oyokohene, lost his son, Gerald Osei Akoto, during the disaster which claimed about 14 lives and injured several others.

Speaking to journalists at a press conference in Kumasi, he described the Melcom disaster, notably the loss of his son, as very unfortunate and sad, but was quick to add that “only God knows what is best for us.”

Nana Berhene, who seemed not interested in pointing accusing fingers at people for the cause of the disaster, appealed to everyone to support the bereaved families to give a befitting burial to their lost ones.

George Davis, Regional Manager, Melcom, announced that his outfit had a mouth-watering financial package for the families of the deceased persons and those who got injured during that fatal incident.

He said Melcom was taking care of the medical bills of all the injured persons, indicating that the company had duly insured the place and its workers.

Mr. Davies denied rumours that Melcom was using the sixth floor of the building as its warehouse, therefore the heavy items might have resulted in the collapse of the building.

Setting the records straight, he said Melcom rented the ground, first and second floors of the building so they did not have access to any of the upper floors, indicating that Melcom had its warehouse about two kilometers away from where the disaster occurred.

Even though he said Melcom was not ready to blame anyone for the cause of the incident, he said it was prudent that Ghanaians were made to know what really happened, rebutting speculations that there were visible cracks on the building before the collapse.

Prince Osei Agyeman, Marketing Manager, Melcom, Kumasi, stated that Melcom would never put the lives of their workers and customers in danger. He therefore appealed to those who have traded with Melcom over the years to continue doing so.

Mr. Osei Agyemang stated that although Melcom lost several valuable items during the incident, they were not interested in the value of the items; however, their wish was to see to it that all the injured persons were taken good care of to enable them recover soon.
