The New Patriotic Party says it would still go to congress even if President Kufuor stands unopposed as the party’s Presidential candidate. Nominations to the position opened over two weeks ago, but nobody has expressed interest in the position. The reasons are not far fetched. Party sources say, people are shying away, because of the fear of being defeated by President Kufuor, and the possible interpretation of such an action as a sign of disrespect to the President.
Although President Kufuor has not declared his intention to contest a second round, party executives say, it is a forgone conclusion. With some more weeks left for nominations to close, it is being suggested that some members may indicate their interest.
NPP General Secretary Dan Botwe says the congress would take place irrespective of the number of contestants who will file for the Presidential slot. This is in fulfilment of the party’s constitutional requirement, which stipulates that a flag bearer be elected two years before national elections.
