Minister fights doctor over brother’s death

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has called for a thorough investigation into the untimely death of Nana Yaw Asare Mensah, a Photo-Journalist in Parliament, whose sad event occurred at the Mercy Clinic at Mataheko in Accra on Tuesday September 18, 2012.

The Minister attributed Nana Yaw's untimely death to the alleged misapplication of medication on him by the medical practitioner, Dr. Victor Kofi Agadzi, the proprietor of Mercy Clinic.

According to Hon. Ofosu Ampofo, where as a post-mortem examination on the late Nana Yaw pointed to the fact that, he died of pneumonia, the Clinic did not even detect any such sickness, but was instead treating him of cholera.

“The Doctor subsequently ended up administering ten (10) infusions to him, with tenth one sending him to his grave”, the Local Government Minister, who is a brother to the Late Nana Yaw lamented.

Hon. Ofosu Ampofo threw this bombshell at the London House in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital during the one-week celebration of the Late ace photo-Journalist, Nana Yaw Asare.

The Minister could not fathom why the doctor failed to refer the patient to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, which was a stone-throw from his Clinic after he had tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him a day after he had been admitted to the Clinic.

While referring to the Doctor's action as sheer recklessness, he charged media practitioners at the one week memorial to take up the issue, which he described as a food for thought, so as to save the lives of unsuspecting patients who happen to find themselves in such unfortunate situations.

The Minister told the gathering amidst tears that, he believes that, an investigation into the untimely death of his late brother will establish the facts and lay to rest speculations and beliefs that, the late Nana Yaw did not receive the best of medical attention at the Mercy Clinic.

Hon. Ofosu, who spoke with passion said, the doctor's explanations on how he administered drugs to his late brother, were untenable and indicated that, an investigation into it will go a long way to save the lives of others who may find themselves in a similar situation.

The late Nana Yaw, until his untimely death, had been operating in Parliament House for well over nineteen years.

The late Nana Yaw Asare also happened to be the organizing secretary of the parliamentary Press Corps until his untimely demise, a role he played effectively to the admiration of all.
