CI78: Supreme Court dismisses Chris Ackumey's application

The Supreme Court has dismissed an application by a member of the ruling NDC’s legal team, Chris Ackumey, to join the case concerning the controversial CI 78 which when passed into law will allow the Electoral Commission to create 45 new constituencies.

Supreme Court Judge, Justice Julius Ansah who threw out the application however permitted Chris Akumey who is interested in contesting as a Parliamentary candidate in the yet-to-be created Ablekuma West Constituency to be a friend of the court.

Mr. Ackumey says any attempt to stop the EC from carrying out its constitutional mandate of creating the constituencies will affect him adversely, hence his desire to join the case substantive case before the court.

Counsel for the applicant David Annan expressed his satisfaction on the ruling and said the dismissal of the application does not completely rule his client out of being party to the case.

Last week, the Supreme Court three out an application by a businessman, praying the court to prevent parliament from sitting to deliberate on the CI78.

The judge who sat on the case indicated that the court did not have the power to stop the proceedings of parliament unless it runs contrary to the dictates of the constitution.
