Confirmed!Nana Konadu for President on NDP ticket

Revelers at the Legends and Legacy Ball, which honoured Ghana’s own high life king, Amakye Dede, over the weekend had more than just music to enjoy as what seemed to be a rare declaration was made to the hearing of the thousands that thronged the Accra International Conference Centre.

Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, in what seemed as a tacit acceptance of the call on her by the National Democratic Party (NDP) to be the party’s flagbearer for the December polls, gave an indication of her readiness to take up the role.

Mrs Rawlings, in a response to a question from Kwame Sefa Kayi (the MC for the night) as to whether her NDP flagbearship ambition will come to fruition replied “ebebasu”, to wit ‘it will be a reality’, much to the excitement of the audience.

Leaders of the NDP have been calling on the former first lady to be the standard bearer of the party since it is the clarion call of their supporters on the ground. The leadership however stated that it was waiting to receive its license from the Electoral Commission before making overtures at Mrs Rawlings.

Incidentally, the party received its license on Friday, which grants it the right to operate fully as a political party.

But at the Conference Centre, Kwame Sefa Kayi might have made the work a lot easier for the NDP as his question elicited a favourable response from Mrs. Rawlings.

Speaking in Twi, Kwame Sefa Kayi asked again “so what will happen to Nana Akufo-Addo and the others?” while pointing at the NPP flagbearer who was sitting on the other side of the VIP area. Mrs. Rawlings in a characteristic fashion replied: “we will push them aside” amidst laughter.

If this is not a light response to a very serious question, then the lines are drawn for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) whose founder, Jerry John Rawlings, is already sitting on the fringes.

What is certain, however, is that Mr. Rawlings also has a tough decision to make in either supporting his wife on one hand or his party, which he says has ‘babies with teeth’.

The programme was attended by leading members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by Ex-President Kufuor, Nana Akufo-Addo and his wife, Hon. Hackman Owusu Agyemang as well as a Vice Chairman of the party Fred Oware.
