Plane crash leads to heavy traffic jam around El Wak

Roads leading to the El Wak Stadium in Accra were this afternoon characterized by heavy traffic jams, following last Saturday's plane crash.

The accident scene which is the road on the side of the stadium leading from Burma-Camp, had been cordoned off by security personnel and this had resulted in the traffic jam.

A few drivers who tried to avoid the traffic by making a u-turn were forced to go back into their lanes by security personnel in order to prevent any accidents from happening.

Crowds of curious on-lookers also kept swarming in to have a view of the accident scene.

Although security personnel would not allow anyone to go beyond a certain point, the curious on-lookers seemed quite satisfied watching the scene from their approved points.

A road-side seller who was at the scene of the accident when it happened, told the Ghana News Agency, "we heard a loud bang, although we were around the 37 area, rushed to the scene and saw dead bodies, some of them mangled, being taken out of the bus. There was a lot of blood."

A Boeing 727 Cargo Air craft, last Saturday night, overshot the runway at the Kotoka International Airport during landing, and dragged a 207 Benz bus, killing ten people who were on board the bus.

All four crew members who were on board the aircraft are however safe and receiving treatment.

President John Evans Atta Mills, who visited the accident scene on Sunday morning, consoled the bereaved families.

Mrs Doreen Owusu Fianko, Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Ltd, said the operations at the airport has not been disrupted.**
