NDC holds crucial meeting today

With only ten days to the national delegates congress in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, the NDC is yet to agree on certain modalities for the April 27-29 congress.

Accordingly, party chiefs, are scheduled to convene a crucial meeting today at the party’s headquarters to discuss all outstanding issues.

Insiders, according to the paper have hinted that the proposed meeting is a big hoax garnered by one of the factions, which is opposed to a single chairmanship idea.

Preceding actions on the co or single chairmanship in the upcoming Congress nearly tore the party apart until some weeks ago when the party hierarchy in a split decision agreed to adopt the single chairmanship idea.

Supporters of the co-chairmanship idea had in the aftermath of the party’s defeat in the December 2000 elections argued that the idea was the only way of curtailing the powers of a draconian single chairman.

“Many of the party’s stalwarts who The Independent talked to, expressed shock at today’s meeting, claiming that the issue had been dealt with at the immediate past meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC).”

According to the group, most of the party’s regional chairmen at the last meeting kicked against the co-chairmanship idea and instead advocated a single chairmanship with three vice-chairmen.

What is agitating the minds of many on today’s meeting is the subtle attempts underlining the motive by the group that supports the co-chairmanship idea.

According to them, the move is another of the various moves to scuttle the chances of Dr. Obed Asamoah who is considered the hottest candidate for the NDC top job.

“A source was emphatic on the main agenda for today’s meeting: It’s a desperate bid by the pro-co-chairman group to launch a last minute onslaught to maintain that concept.”

The purported meeting, which invariably is at the instance of the faction opposed to Dr. Asamoah’s bid, will receive serious opposition from those who support the single chairmanship idea.

“Inside sources hinted The Independent the tabling of the co-chairmanship motion might not receive the approval of the majority members of the NDC National Executive Council, who sources say all approved of a single chairmanship idea at their last meeting.”
