GETOM Appeals To (GES) TO ALLOW TEACHERS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE UPCOMING BIOMETRIC REGISTRATION EXERCISE.

THEME: APPEALING TO GHANA EDUCATION SERVICE TO LIFT EMBARGO

It is an undeniable fact that one of the keys to a violence free election is to have a credible and undisputed voter register. The biometric registration is slated for 24th March to 5th May, 2012 and according to the Electoral Commission (EC), the registration officials (teachers forming the core) have already been trained for the exercise. The decision by Ghana Education Service (GES) not to allow teachers to be used as registration officials even though tenable can have serious negative impact on the exercise. We are therefore appealing to GES to rescind their decision for the sake of posterity and national Peace. We suggest that if possible, schools should vacate earlier than schedule (Leaving the BECE and WASSE candidates and their teachers in school) to pave way for teachers (Primary, JHS 1&2 and SHS 1&2) to be deployed for this crucial national exercise. We believe a successful registration exercise is likely to culminate in a peaceful election and create a peaceful environment for a smooth academic work. The success of the voter registration should therefore be the priority of every Ghanaian thus all hands should be on deck to make the exercise a success.
