VRA 50th anniversary competition winners receive awards

Accra, May 13, GNA - The Volta River Authority (VRA), on Friday presented awards to the winners of its 93What Do You Know" and Inter-Schools Debate competitions, which formed part of its 50th anniversary celebration.

For the "What Do You Know" competition, Mr Paul Afari Mintah, a tutor at Boamposem Senior High at Dunkwa-on-Offin, emerged the winner and took home a 42-inch LCD television set and GH¢2,500.00.

The second prize winner was Mr Raymond Akpatsa, a law student at the University of Ghana, who took home a 37-inch LCD TV and GH¢1,500.00.

The third prize winner was Mr Albert Beckley, a self-employed man, who received a home theatre and GH¢1,000.00 while Vivian Abem, a lecturer at the University of Development Studies, emerged the fourth prize winner and received a laptop computer and GH¢500.00.

For the inter-schools debate, Presbyterian Boys Senior High School, Legon, emerged the winner. The School received five desktop computers, three laptop computers and a projector.

Mfantsipim Senior High School, which emerged the first runner-up, won three desktop computers, two laptop computers and a projector while the second runner-up award went to Keta Senior High School, which received one laptop computer and a projector.

All the Senior High School participants received GH¢100 and a dictionary each.

Mrs Efua Garbrah-Sarfo, Acting Human Resource Director of VRA, said the competitions were organised for the students and public to understand and appreciate the work of the VRA.

"As the second largest utility provider in West Africa, we need to let the public know what we do and the organization of these competitions was seen as one of the means," she explained.

Mrs Garbrah-Sarfo charged the participants to continuously educate the public on the works of the VRA and energy conservation. Mr Kweku Andoh Awortwe, Chief Executive Officer, VRA, commended participants of the competition foe exhibiting sheer knowledge about the operations of the VRA.

He noted that 20 schools in all responded to the call to participate in the inter-school debate.
