SIC supports May 9th Anniversary Celebration

Accra, May 3, GNA - SIC Insurance Company, one of the leading insurance companies in Ghana on Tuesday, made a donation of GHC15,000 to the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) as part of their support towards the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the May 9th Stadium Disaster.

Mr Benjamin Acolatse, Managing Director of SIC who presented the cheque to the ministry in Accra on Tuesday said his outfit aims to develop a deeper association with sports in Ghana, hence the donation was the first step towards achieving that target.

He said the company has also developed a risk improvement system to give 91innocent' spectators adequate financial compensation in case of accidents at the various League centers. Mr Accolatse said the product will also give spectators the needed peace of mind when they go to the stadiums and also address the deficiency in the system with regards to the presence of soccer fans at the stadium.

He noted that SIC was ready to provide the needed support to the Ministry for effective sports development in the country. Nii Nortey Dua, Deputy Minister of MYS expressed appreciation to the company for supporting the historic event.

He said even though the May 9th Disaster does not bring good memories to Ghanaians, the victims shed their blood for the nation and this was manifest in the useful lessons from the incident. The Deputy Minister said the ministry has outlined series of activities to mark the event, adding that they are in negotiations with Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko to play a commemorative match this year.

Nii Nortey Dua appealed to other corporate bodies to come to the aid of the Ministry to ensure a successful implementation of the 10th Anniversary programme of the May 9th Stadium Disaster. 03 May 2011
