Mills says Sofoline Interchange project will be completed

Kumasi, April 13, GNA - President John Evans Atta Mills has assured residents of Kumasi that everything would be done to complete the 10.3 kilometre Komfo Anokye Roudabout-Abuakwa road re-construction.

He said this was when he inspected the project during his official tour of the Ashanti Region.

The road is being constructed into an asphalted concrete surface dual carriage way with Interchanges at Sofoline and Komfo Anokye Roundabout and an under-pass at Kwadaso.

It was initially estimated at $80 million and is contingent on Government of Ghana Funding.

The Chinese Contractors undertaking the job, China Geo-Engineering, has for some time suspended work on it because of lack of funds.

President Mills said they would mobilize resources to finish the project to help ease traffic congestion and bring some relief to the people served by this road corridor.

There were challenges but that is why government is there, he stated, as he asked the people to bear with them whilst they looked for the money.

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Joe Gidisu, earlier briefed the President on the progress of work so far and said it was about 51.5 per cent complete. He put total payments made at GH¢42,123,213.68. Added to this is compensation payment of GH¢3,353,184.03 to affected property owners. The project was started in August 2007, and was supposed to have been completed within a period of 36 months.
