The family of 24-year-old Ghanaian caregiver Joseph Owusu has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into his death in the Bronx, New York.

His brother, Kwadwo, urged the police to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.

The family’s appeal was made during a visit by officials of Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, led by Deputy Permanent Representative Ben Dotsei Malor and Consul-General Anthony El-Adas.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa joined the visit by phone to convey his condolences and assure the family of the government’s support.

According to a statement issued by the Permanent Mission on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Mr Ablakwa expressed shock at the death, particularly because it followed the fatal shooting of another Ghanaian, 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, in the same borough on October 29.

“I have been shocked and saddened by this tragic news, especially coming on the heels of the horrible news of the killing of 15-year-old Javits, also in the Bronx, New York,” he said.

The minister assured the family that the government would engage relevant US authorities and agencies to ensure that the circumstances surrounding Joseph’s death were investigated.

Joseph worked as a caregiver, supporting persons with disabilities, and also served as a chorister at his local Methodist church. His family described him as a beloved son and brother whose death had devastated relatives and members of his community.

The family said police had informed them that an autopsy was being conducted as investigations continued.

However, the statement did not provide further details about the circumstances of his death or its possible cause.

Joseph’s death, coming days after Javits was killed in the Bronx, has heightened concern among Ghanaians in New York and relatives in Ghana, with calls for investigations and accountability.
