Former Bantama Member of Parliament and Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu, has recounted a terrifying mid-air incident on a flight from Kumasi to Accra, saying passengers feared for their lives after hearing a loud bang followed by what he described as a free fall.

Dr Kokofu, who was among the passengers on the flight, said the incident occurred approximately three minutes after take-off on November 3, 2026, and left passengers, including several prominent personalities, traumatised.

Speaking in an interview on Lawson TV on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, he confirmed that he was on board the flight, which was initially delayed by about 30 minutes due to what passengers were told were operational challenges.

“It is true, I was on board the flight. The delay was for about 30 minutes, so we left around 4 (sic). They told us the delay was due to operational challenges,” he said.

Describing the incident, Dr Kokofu said it was a frightening experience that went beyond the turbulence passengers would normally encounter during air travel.

“It was a harrowing experience, which was very frightening. I know that turbulence on both local and international flights is a normal occurrence, but it was God who saved us in yesterday’s incident; otherwise, there is no way (sic),” he recounted.

He explained that the aircraft suddenly produced a loud bang before gaining altitude and then appearing to plunge downwards.

“It got to a point, we had all given up. What happened was that the plane went up and suddenly we had a big bang, as if a car had hit a wall. It was not normal turbulence… the plane just went up after the bang, and then it started falling. It was a free fall,” he said.

According to him, the frightening development triggered panic among passengers, with people crying, shouting and praying for divine intervention.

“All you could hear was people crying and shouting the name of the Lord. Christians were praying, Muslims were doing the same, even the traditionalists. I was saying, ‘God, have mercy on us’… It was a complete trauma,” he added.

Dr Kokofu disclosed that the aircraft was almost fully occupied, with only two seats unoccupied, and carried several notable personalities.

Among the passengers were Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene and Ghanaian actor Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win.

He said he would not disclose the name of the airline involved in the incident for now but had already instructed his office to file a formal complaint with the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

The complaint, he said, is intended to trigger an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish what happened during the flight.
