The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has directed all traders occupying unauthorised bus stops across the metropolis to stop trading immediately and vacate the locations within 48 hours ahead of a major enforcement exercise.
In a press release dated November 4, 2026, the Assembly said the move aims to restore order and ensure the proper use of public spaces.
The directive follows concerns raised by commercial drivers over the obstruction of designated stopping points, which impedes the movement of vehicles and pedestrians and poses risks to public safety.
“The AMA acknowledges that the occupation of designated bus stops by hawkers obstructs the movement of vehicles and pedestrians, contributes to traffic congestion and forces commuters to board and alight from vehicles at unsafe locations, increasing the risk of road accidents,” the statement said.
Accra Mayor, Hon Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has already initiated enforcement measures, including removing traders from unauthorised spaces at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Achimota, and parts of the Central Business District (CBD).
The Assembly is urging all hawkers and traders to immediately vacate designated bus stops and refrain from trading in areas reserved for the movement and stopping of vehicles and pedestrians.
"The Assembly will intensify enforcement and take the necessary action against persons who disregard this directive in accordance with the Assembly's by-laws," it warned.
AMA further cautioned hawkers against returning to cleared locations, noting that reoccupation of bus stops will attract further enforcement action, including prosecution.
"The AMA remains committed to maintaining public order, promoting road safety and ensuring the orderly use of public spaces across the metropolis," the release signed by Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs, for the Metro Chief Executive, added.
