Questions are mounting over the Ghana government's response to the continued detention of Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, in the Netherlands.

Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, has criticised the government's apparent silence over the matter, describing its handling of the situation as unfair to the detained MP.

Speaking in an interview on Salt FM on November 2, 2026, he argued that the government should intervene on behalf of the MP.

“This government has really been unfair to Hon. Ohene Kwame Frimpong for leaving him to rot in the custody of another country. Why is the government pretending they can’t do anything about his case?” he questioned.

“The truth is, why is the government so silent about it, “he added.

His comments have reignited public discussion about the level of diplomatic support and intervention Ghana is providing to one of its sitting legislators, who has remained in Dutch custody since his arrest in May 2026.

It may be recalled that the Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, stated that two applications seeking bail for Frimpong have been unsuccessful.

He disclosed that the initial substantive bail application was dismissed by a Dutch court, while a subsequent appeal was also rejected, leaving the Asante Akyem North MP in continued detention.

“He is still in custody. He's still in the hands of the Dutch government in Amsterdam. We have done two applications, one substantive, one appeal for his bail, but they all got refused,” Dafeamekpor stated.

He further indicated that Parliament was preparing for the substantive extradition proceedings, which will determine whether Frimpong should be transferred to the United States to face the allegations against him.

The extradition hearing is scheduled to commence on November 18, 2026.

Frimpong was arrested by Dutch authorities at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam in May 2026 after travelling from Ghana. Following the arrest, Parliament confirmed his detention on May 12 and indicated that it was engaging Ghana's diplomatic mission in The Hague to obtain further information about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The arrest was reportedly linked to an extradition request from the United States.

According to his lawyer, a warrant had been issued by a magistrate's court in Illinois at the request of American authorities. His legal team reportedly maintained that the warrant was intended to facilitate his extradition for questioning and did not contain formal criminal charges against him.

However, subsequent reports have linked the investigation to allegations of romance fraud, money laundering and other financial crimes. These allegations remain unproven, and Frimpong is presumed innocent unless established otherwise through the judicial process.

Meanwhile, the questions surrounding the government's response continue to attract attention. While Parliament has indicated that diplomatic engagement took place following his arrest, concerns remain over the extent of assistance being provided to the detained legislator.
