President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Antigua and Barbuda to join other world leaders at the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), where trade, investment and economic cooperation are expected to dominate discussions.

The President arrived in St. John’s ahead of the high-level biennial summit, which is taking place from November 1 to 4, 2026, under the theme, “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”

The meeting, which brings together Heads of Government from across the Commonwealth, is being attended by His Majesty King Charles III, who serves as Head of the Commonwealth.

President Mahama's participation marks his first appearance at a Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting since his re-election in December 2024.

During the summit, he is expected to engage fellow leaders on issues relating to international trade, investment opportunities, economic partnerships and sustainable development, with particular attention to strengthening cooperation among member countries.

The President is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with selected Heads of State and Government during his two-day visit to St. John’s. The engagements are expected to provide an opportunity for Ghana to explore areas of mutual interest and strengthen its diplomatic and economic relationships with other Commonwealth nations.

The 2026 CHOGM is particularly significant given the scale of the Commonwealth, which comprises 56 independent countries across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe and the Pacific.

According to the Commonwealth Secretariat, the organisation represents approximately 2.7 billion people, with more than 60 per cent of its population aged 29 or younger. Its combined gross domestic product is also projected to reach US$19.5 trillion by 2027.

The summit provides a platform for member countries to discuss shared challenges, deepen diplomatic relations and identify practical opportunities for collaboration in areas such as economic development, climate resilience, innovation and international trade.

For Ghana, President Mahama's participation presents an opportunity to strengthen existing partnerships and pursue new investment and trade opportunities within the Commonwealth.
