Ivorian star Yan Diomande’s impressive form in La Liga and other major competitions has raised questions about teammate Vinícius Jr’s place in the starting eleven.
In his last six games, Diomande has recorded eight goal contributions, scoring four goals and providing four assists. His performances have strengthened his case for a regular place in the starting line-up.
His thunderous volley against Racing Santander in La Liga on November 1, 2026, further boosted his bid to establish himself as a key player in the team.

However, Diomande has been thriving on the left wing, where Brazilian winger Vinícius usually plays. This could set up a battle for a starting spot when Vinícius returns from suspension.
The Brazilian has come under scrutiny for his slow start to the season, having struggled to contribute goals and assists and to display the attacking sharpness and dribbling ability for which he is known.
Head coach José Mourinho appears to favour Diomande, who contributes more defensively by tracking back, winning the ball and helping Marc Cucurella recover possession.
After the November 2026 international break, a difficult decision may have to be made over which player will feature more prominently between Diomande and Vinícius.
