A war of words erupted between the founder and leader of the Glorious Word Power Ministries International, Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah, and the founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Pastor Mensa Otabil, following comments the latter made about prophets in Ghana over the weekend.
Owusu Bempah, who appeared unhappy with Otabil's remarks about the prophetic ministry, launched a scathing attack on the renowned preacher, accusing him of attempting to undermine the influence and credibility of prophets in the country.
In his response, the controversial prophet raised a series of allegations against Otabil, questioning his stance on prophecy and accusing him of making disparaging comments about prophets and their followers. He also made claims involving some pastors he described as close associates of the ICGC founder, including allegations of infidelity and an intervention in a potentially damaging scandal.
Owusu Bempah further warned that he would expose what he claimed to know about Otabil and people associated with him if the ICGC founder continued making comments he considered damaging to prophets in Ghana.
But what exactly did Owusu Bempah say about Otabil? Below are some of the major allegations he made during his response.
Allegation of infidelity involving a UK-based pastor
Owusu Bempah challenged Otabil over the alleged conduct of a UK-based pastor whom he described as a close associate of the ICGC founder.
He claimed that the pastor had introduced a female church member to a man who later married her but allegedly continued having an intimate relationship with the woman after her marriage.
Questioning why Otabil continued to protect the pastor while making comments against other ministers, Owusu Bempah said:
“Do you know the things I know about Mensa Otabil. Which pastor in UK gave out his church member for marriage but was still sleeping with that church member? You keep protecting you but you are always speaking against our work,” Owusu Bempah fumed.
He further alleged that he had personally intervened to prevent a separate matter involving Otabil's friend from becoming an international scandal.
According to him, the issue could have attracted coverage from major international media organisations, including the BBC and CNN, but he contacted the individual involved and persuaded him to drop it.
“... if not for me, by now Dr Mensa Otabil's friend issue would be on BBC, CNN because he is known worldwide. Dr Mensa Otabil’s issue would have arisen after that of his friend, but I intervened. I called the person and spoke to him in the name of God, and he dropped the issue,” he added.
Allegation that Otabil visits a spiritualist for rituals
In another allegation, Owusu Bempah questioned Otabil's alleged visits to a person he described as a spiritualist in the Nkwakwa area.
He claimed that the ICGC founder travelled from Accra to Nkwakwa to consult the unidentified individual, raising questions about the purpose of the alleged visits.
Owusu Bempah also referred to an incident in which Otabil was reportedly knocked down by a vehicle at Lindado, questioning what he had gone there to obtain for his church.
“From Accra to Nkwakwa, who does Mensa Otabil go to see? What does he go for there? He goes to a man somewhere in the bush over there. A vehicle knocked him down at Lindado; what was he going for there to bring to his church?” he questioned.
Owusu Bempah did not provide evidence to substantiate the allegations in the remarks presented.
He subsequently issued another warning to Otabil, saying that if the ICGC founder continued attacking prophets, he would also make information about him public.
'There are a lot of crooks calling themselves pastors' - Otabil's comments that have angered prophets
“If he doesn’t keep mute and he decides to destroy prophets, then we are all going to press the self-destruction button. He should take his stupidity away… Mensa Otabli is very stubborn,” he added.
Attempt to undermine the prophetic ministry and label Ghanaian prophets as fake
Owusu Bempah also accused Otabil of deliberately seeking to undermine the prophetic ministry in Ghana through his public comments.
He suggested that the ICGC founder's remarks were part of an attempt to discredit prophets and weaken their influence among Christians in the country.
According to him, Otabil's comments were not merely criticisms of certain practices within the prophetic ministry but an attack on the credibility of prophets as a whole.
The Glorious Word Power Ministries International leader also took issue with comments attributed to Otabil suggesting that about 90 per cent of prophets in Ghana were fake or were not genuinely born again.
Owusu Bempah questioned the basis of such a generalisation, arguing that the remarks unfairly cast doubt on the authenticity of the prophetic ministry.
He maintained that Otabil's comments risked portraying the majority of prophets in the country as illegitimate, rather than distinguishing between genuine ministers of God and those who might be engaged in questionable practices.
Questions about Otabil's position on spiritual revelations and ICGC issues
Owusu Bempah also questioned what he described as an inconsistency in Otabil's position on spiritual matters, particularly his criticism of prophetic revelations.
He argued that Otabil had previously spoken about receiving visions himself, questioning why the ICGC founder would now appear to dismiss or criticise the practice of receiving revelations from God.
For Owusu Bempah, the issue raised questions about the consistency of Otabil's teachings and his position on how God communicates with believers.
The controversial preacher further challenged Otabil over the presence of a prophet within the leadership structure of his church.
He cited the appointment of a pastor identified in earlier reports as Prophet Annor to head an ICGC branch, questioning why Otabil would allow someone identified as a prophet to lead a congregation if he believed God no longer communicated with people through prophetic revelations.
He used the example to question what he considered a contradiction between Otabil's public comments on prophecy and the structure of his own church.
Owusu Bempah's warning to Otabil
Beyond the allegations, Owusu Bempah issued a stern warning to the ICGC founder, threatening to make public information he claimed to possess about him and people associated with him.
He warned that he would not remain silent if Otabil continued making statements he believed were damaging to the reputation of prophets in Ghana.
In a particularly strong remark directed at the renowned preacher, Owusu Bempah reportedly said:
"If he doesn’t shut his mouth and tries to mess with the reputation of Prophets in this country, trust me, then we will also mess him up because we know things."
