The Provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, Prof. Sandow Mark Yidana, has urged the 2026 University of Ghana matriculants to conduct themselves responsibly as they pursue their academic goals.

Speaking at the Great Hall on October 31, 2026, he said students’ actions and inactions could affect the university’s reputation and urged them to make the most of their time on campus.

Prof. Yidana, who read an address on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, called on the first-year students to take advantage of campus resources and strive for academic excellence.

“As students of the University of Ghana, you carry the university’s identity and values wherever you go. You are ambassadors of this distinguished institution, and your conduct reflects not only on yourselves but also on the reputation of the university. I therefore urge you to uphold the highest standards of integrity, responsibility and excellence, and to be worthy representatives of this university at all times and in all places.

"True success at a university extends beyond academic achievement. It is reflected in the values you embrace, the skills you develop and the strength of character you build along the way. I encourage you to participate actively in the academic, social and cultural life of the university,” he said.

Prof. Yidana also advised students to explore their interests and make the most of the opportunities available to them, while remaining disciplined.

“This period of your academic journey provides an invaluable opportunity to explore your interests, overcome challenges, and develop the professional competencies and personal attributes required for lifelong success. I encourage you to take full advantage of every opportunity for academic, social, and personal growth.

"As you begin this new chapter, be assured that while the journey may be demanding, it will also reveal your strengths. Through discipline, determination and the support systems available, you will be well equipped to turn your aspirations into reality,” he added.

The matriculation ceremony was held in two sessions, morning and afternoon, at the Great Hall and the Cedi Conference Centre. The sessions were for students from the Colleges of Basic and Applied Sciences, Humanities, Health Sciences and Education.

Matriculation is the formal ceremony through which new students are inducted into the University of Ghana community as junior members. During the ceremony, students take the matriculation oath, pledging to uphold the university’s values, rules, and traditions.

By signing the matriculation register online through the STS portal, students formally pledge their loyalty and commitment to the institution and accept the responsibilities and values of its academic community.
