Footage of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, celebrating the Convention People’s Party’s (CPP) victory in the 1954 Gold Coast general election has resurfaced.

The video shared on X by Ghana Facts and History on October 29, 2026, shows Nkrumah addressing the public after the election.

The leader could be seen expressing joy over the formation of an all-African cabinet and the renewed mandate to continue the struggle for independence.
Other government officials are also seen standing beside him, smiling as they share in the moment.

Nkrumah said the election result showed that the people had renewed their confidence in his government and wanted it to complete the work towards independence.

“On this eventful occasion, my colleagues and I are very happy to be the first members of the First African Cabinet. The people of the country have reaffirmed their confidence in us and have given us the mandate to carry on and finish the job,” he said.

The 1954 election was the first to be held under full adult suffrage in the Gold Coast, allowing eligible citizens to vote.

The CPP won 72 of the 104 seats contested in the election, which followed the approval of a new constitution on April 29, 1954.

The constitution ended the system under which members of the Legislative Assembly were elected by tribal councils. It expanded the Assembly and introduced direct elections in equal, single-member constituencies.

It also provided for a cabinet made up of African ministers. While the governor retained control over defence and foreign affairs, the elected Assembly gained authority over most internal affairs.
