Former Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has described longevity, consistency and discipline as the defining qualities behind his historic career, which saw him feature at six FIFA World Cups.
Ochoa, who recently retired from professional football, became one of the few players in history to appear at six editions of the tournament, spanning 2006 to 2026.
Reflecting on the achievement in an exclusive interview with Flashscore, the Mexican legend admitted that maintaining his place in the national team across two decades required constant commitment and the ability to prove himself at every stage.
“Six World Cups speak about longevity, consistency and discipline. You have to maintain a good level for so many years, and there are four years between each World Cup,” Ochoa said.

The 41-year-old also highlighted his performance against Brazil at the 2014 World Cup as a defining moment in his career.
Ochoa produced several outstanding saves to help Mexico secure a goalless draw against the hosts, earning widespread recognition for his display.
He believes that performance significantly changed how he was perceived internationally.
“People knew me before that World Cup because of my time in Mexico and the Copa Libertadores, but I think that after that game there was a big change at the international level,” he explained.
Ochoa also featured at the 2010, 2018, 2022, and 2026 tournaments, with his final appearance at the World Cup in Mexico providing what he described as a fantastic way to close his international career.
