Executive Director of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, has questioned why the Ghana Armed Forces have been unable to stop illegal mining, insisting that the military is capable of helping to end the menace.
She argued that illegal miners should not be considered more powerful than the country’s military, calling on the authorities to take decisive action to halt the destruction caused by galamsey.
According to a report by myjoyonline.com on October 29, 2026, Serwah made the remarks during a discussion on the effects of illegal mining on the country, where she called for stronger enforcement of the law against those involved in the practice.
“So, the fact of the matter is we know who they are, we know very well that when the chiefs, the political authority and the police commander come together to say no to illegal mining, it is very unlikely that illegal mining will thrive. We know who the players are.

“I don't think you want to tell me that the whole Ghana Armed Forces – we are not as strong as the illegal miners, so why are we not stopping it?” asked.
Serwah maintained that the fight against galamsey requires more than repeated discussions and public expressions of concern, arguing that authorities must demonstrate the political will to enforce the law and bring illegal mining to an end.
She also stressed the importance of collaboration among traditional leaders, political authorities and the police, noting that a united front against illegal mining would make it difficult for the practice to thrive.
