The Ghana Prisons Service has assured the public that former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is doing fine and remains safe in its custody despite allegations of an attempted poisoning by some inmates.
According to the Service, measures have been put in place to ensure his safety while investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, Superintendent Abdul Latif Adamu, gave the assurance during an interview on Citi News on October 28, 2026.
“We can assure you that he is doing fine. He is good. We have put in place the necessary mechanisms to investigate and find out the truth in the matter, and also bring all those who are found culpable to book,” citinewsroom.com quoted him to have said.
Superintendent Adamu explained that the alleged poisoning attempt was brought to the attention of the Prisons Service by an aide to Chairman Wontumi following a visit to the politician.

He said the Service immediately initiated investigations upon receiving the information to determine the credibility of the allegations and identify anyone who may have been involved.
“The issue came to our attention through his aide, who visited him. In the course of their conversation, the matter came up, and the aide quickly brought it to the attention of the Prisons Service administration. When we received the information, we immediately launched an investigation,” he explained.
He further assured the public that the Service was treating the allegations seriously and would make the findings of its investigation available once the process was completed.
“Very soon, we will release the investigation report to the public so that everyone knows what happened. However, we can assure you that he is doing fine and is in good condition,” he added.
The investigation follows allegations by Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a senior aide to Chairman Wontumi, that some inmates had attempted to poison the former NPP regional chairman while he was in prison.
