The Ghana Prisons Service has dismissed claims that former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, is receiving special treatment in prison.

According to a myjoyonline.com report published on October 28, 2026, Chief Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, CPS Abdul Latif, said Wontumi is subject to the same rules and regulations as other inmates.

“I think the Prisons are governed by rules and regulations, and those rules and regulations don't segregate or discriminate between prisoner A and prisoner B. You understand? So, I can tell you that Wontumi is being subjected to the same rules and regulations that other prisoners are being subjected to,” he said.

CPS Abdul Latif also cited overcrowding at the Nsawam prison, arguing that claims of preferential treatment for Wontumi were unfounded.

“So, the claim that Wontumi is being given preferential treatment in prison is not true and cannot be true. Also, the prison is already overcrowded. We all know the situation in Nsawam,” he added.

He said the facility, which was designed to accommodate about 851 inmates, currently holds more than 3,000 people.

“A facility that's supposed to hold about 851 inmates is now holding 3,000-plus inmates. So, I can tell you there's no truth in that claim, and it's something that perhaps is being put out there for attention,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Prisons Service has assured the public that Wontumi is safe in custody, following a report of an alleged plot by five inmates to poison him.

“We can say that Wontumi is safe and there's nothing to worry about when it comes to his security in the prison,” CPS Abdul Latif assured.

The allegation was disclosed by Wontumi’s spokesperson, Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, who said Wontumi told him about the alleged plot during a conversation at court on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

According to Dr Boakye-Danquah, someone reportedly overheard the five individuals discussing plans to poison Wontumi and alerted him.

He said Wontumi had reported the matter to prison authorities, and the officer in charge confirmed receiving the report and said the five individuals had been moved to another cell while investigations were conducted.
