Uganda’s Minister of State for Transport, Fred Byamukama, says the introduction of Uganda Airlines’ flights to Ghana has reduced travel time between the two countries from as much as 10 hours to about five hours.

He said passengers travelling between Uganda and Ghana previously had to transit through other countries, often spending several hours waiting for connecting flights before reaching their destinations.

Speaking at the inaugural flight ceremony of Uganda Airlines at Accra International Airport on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Byamukama said the new service would save passengers time and money while boosting trade and tourism between the two countries.

“Before we got this direct flight, coming from Uganda to Accra, Ghana, you have been spending about seven to eight hours or even 10 hours, depending on where you are transiting from,” he said.

He explained that the new service would operate four times a week, making it easier for passengers, tourists and businesspeople to travel between Ghana and Uganda without lengthy transit stops.

“Now, with the good planning and the Ugandan management, of course with the support from the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority, Minister of Finance and Minister of Transport, we have used a maximum of five hours and we are directly here in Ghana,” he stated.

The minister said reducing travel time would help African countries maximise tourism and business opportunities by making movement across the continent easier.

“That shows that when you save time, you save money. And we know there are a lot of tourist attractions here in Ghana, a lot of tourist attractions in Uganda,” he added.

Byamukama also encouraged Ghanaian businesses and investors to explore opportunities in Uganda, noting that the country offers incentives such as tax holidays, tax exemptions and land to attract investment.

“Uganda is a very good home for trade. You can come and trade with us. That's why we give tax holidays, tax exemptions, we can give you free land for investment, good security and all those sorts of things,” he said.

He further highlighted Uganda’s location and road network as advantages for businesses and travellers seeking to connect to other East African countries, including Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and South Sudan.

The minister thanked the Government of Ghana for supporting the introduction of the new flight service and easing visa restrictions for Ugandan travellers.

“That’s the Africa our elders have been planning for,” he said, calling for stronger cooperation and easier movement of people between African countries.

He commended Uganda Airlines’ management for establishing the route and assured the airline of the Ugandan government’s continued support to improve air connectivity and strengthen economic relations between Ghana and Uganda.
