Forty-six Ghanaians are reportedly stranded in South Africa (SA) and are appealing for assistance to return home due to the continuous anti-migration protests in several cities in SA.

These reports come as some Ghanaians evacuated following attacks on foreign nationals in SA during the protests say they are facing public stigma and humiliation upon their return.

According to a report by DW Africa, the returnees have expressed concern over the public backlash surrounding the cost of the evacuation, saying it has added to the emotional burden they are already experiencing.

Michael Addo, who represents the returnees, said the criticism has left some of those who have returned to Ghana reluctant to seek further assistance, despite the challenges they continue to face.

He said the 46 Ghanaians still in South Africa were expected to have been part of earlier evacuation efforts but remain there and are now appealing for help to return home.

Their situation comes amid public scrutiny of the reported US$4.3 million (GH¢49.72 million) spent on evacuating 1,964 Ghanaians from South Africa.

The expenditure has attracted criticism from opposition lawmakers, who have questioned the amount spent and demanded an accounting of the funds.

The controversy has also sparked public debate over the government's handling of the evacuation and the cost involved in bringing the affected citizens home.

However, Addo, according to a post shared by DW Africa on October 27, 2026, has urged the public to consider the experiences of the returnees and respect their dignity as they recover from the ordeal.

He thanked the government for its assistance in facilitating their return but appealed for an end to the stigma and humiliation some of them are reportedly facing.

The appeal comes as the 46 Ghanaians still in South Africa continue to seek support to return home.

Addo's comments highlight the emotional and social challenges facing some of the returnees, even after their evacuation from the country where they experienced attacks and insecurity.
