The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced November 16, 2026, as the new date for the payment of outstanding promotion salary arrears owed to affected staff.
In a letter dated October 27, 2026, and addressed to all regional directors, the GES said it was working with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to ensure that teachers and other affected staff receive their outstanding payments.
“Management wishes to inform all staff who are yet to receive their promotion arrears that efforts are being made in collaboration with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to ensure that the outstanding arrears are paid on 16th November, 2026,” the statement said.
Over 56,000 GES teachers receive outstanding promotion arrears
The announcement comes after some staff were left out of the payment process, with the Service attributing the delay partly to the closure of the government’s payroll system for the processing of October salaries.
According to the GES, the payment system had been closed when inputs for the outstanding arrears were expected to be submitted.
“It is important to note that the Controller and Accountant General’s payment system was closed for processing of end-of-October salaries when inputs were expected to be made,” the letter stated.
The Service said the system would reopen on Wednesday, October 28, to allow the necessary inputs to be made and facilitate payment to affected staff by the new deadline.
“The System will be reopened tomorrow, 28th October, 2026, to enable all inputs to be made and facilitate payment to affected staff by 16th November, 2026,” it added.
The GES also assured staff that discrepancies identified in the payment made on October 16 would be corrected.
“Furthermore, all discrepancies identified in the payment made on 16th October, 2026 will be rectified accordingly,” the statement said.
Management expressed regret over the delay and the inconvenience caused to affected staff.
“Management regrets the delay and the inconvenience caused,” the letter added.
The statement was signed by Prof Smile Dzisi, Deputy Director-General (Management Services), on behalf of the Director-General.
Regional directors have been directed to bring the information to the attention of all affected staff.
