President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the country’s national airline will be revived before he leaves office.
He said significant work was underway to re-establish the airline, adding that the government was working with Boeing Corporation to support the process.
According to Mahama, Boeing will provide guidance on aircraft selection, as well as training for Ghanaian engineers and pilots, throughout the airline’s establishment.
He expressed optimism that the airline would be launched soon, although its final name has not yet been determined.
“I can assure you that I don’t know what the name will be, but let me use Ghana Airways, which is the old airline. I can assure you that a lot of work is going on to bring back our national airline,” he said.
Mahama explained that Boeing had engaged the Ghanaian delegation during his visit to the United Nations General Assembly, offering support for the airline’s establishment.
“Indeed, we are in partnership with Boeing. When I went to the UN General Assembly, Boeing Corporation came and saw us not only in the process of setting up but also to advise on aircraft, training of our engineers, and training of pilots,” he said.
“They want to work with us over the setup period of the airline, and so I think we have a good partner and work is proceeding, and I probably will soon announce the launch of the airline, and before I leave office we should have Ghana Airways back,” he added.
President Mahama made the remarks while addressing officials in the United Kingdom.
