The Press Secretary to the Vice President, Ama Pratt, has faced backlash on social media, particularly on X, following the circulation of a video showing her during an interview with JoyNews.

The interview focused on whether Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang had contacted the relevant authorities to obtain firsthand information about the alleged sexual abuse of 19 female students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).

The school’s headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, has since been interdicted over the allegations.

Following the interviewer’s question, Pratt said the question appeared to require her to disclose the Vice President’s daily schedule, which she said she could not provide.

“Again, now you're asking for, you know, personal day-to-day interactions of Her Excellency and I don't think that I'm at liberty to discuss that,” she said.

The interviewer interjected, clarifying that he was not asking Pratt to disclose details of the Vice President’s daily schedule but only to confirm whether she had spoken to the Education Minister or the police, given that she chairs the Police Council.

Pratt, however, burst into prolonged laughter before giving her second response, saying that they were abreast of all the information they needed to know.

“I'm saying that as we sit this evening, we know that the relevant authorities are on top of this issue and everything is being done to give the needed and professional support that our girls need to come out of this situation better, so to speak. So, for me, as a Ghanaian, I can rest easy knowing that everything that is needed to be done is being done,” she added.

Pratt’s laughter during the questioning appears to have angered some netizens, who argued that allegations of sexual assault involving 19 female students should not be treated lightly.

Some social media users said her reaction appeared to downplay the seriousness of the case, especially as the Vice President’s team had, just days earlier, advocated for women’s empowerment.

“Ama Pratt had the audacity to laugh in the face of a situation this horrific, and tomorrow she’ll turn around and organise Obaa Sima Summit and talk about empowering women,” one user wrote.

They further argued that the Vice President’s Office should have issued a statement addressing the allegations, given that Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is the first woman in Ghana’s history to hold the office.

They added that the office’s handling of the issue so far had not been satisfactory.
