Suspended Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) Headmaster Zakaria Abdulai says he has been cautioned by the police and granted self-recognisance bail following allegations of rape involving a female student.

His comments follow reports of his arrest over alleged sexual abuse of several female students, which were brought to public attention through an investigative documentary, Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow, produced by JoyNews Investigative Correspondent Manasseh Azure Awuni.

The Minister of the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, first disclosed Abdulai’s arrest when he appeared before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

“We’ve been able to get one of the ladies, maybe I shouldn’t be putting so much information out, about semen; we are getting DNA… So, what is happening is that this gentleman has been arrested. He’s going through the due process,” Muntaka told the committee.

Speaking in an interview with radio show host Blakk Rasta, Abdulai said he had been cautioned after a female student and her parents reported him to the police over an alleged rape.

“I have been cautioned because one girl and her parents said I have raped her. So they reported, I was cautioned, and as a headmaster I was given self-recognisance bail. I'm waiting for court days", he told Blakk Rasta.

The suspended headmaster also suggested that the circumstances surrounding the allegation were different from what the public might expect.

“If I give you the turn of events for this particular girl who is claiming I have raped her, you'll be shocked,” he added.

The allegations against Abdulai have attracted widespread attention following the JoyNews investigation, which featured accounts from female students who accused him of sexual misconduct.

The case has also prompted scrutiny of how complaints involving the headmaster were handled by the relevant school and education authorities.

Abdulai has denied the allegations, while the police investigation and subsequent legal proceedings are expected to establish the facts of the case.
