Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston believes the Black Stars will need a miracle to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after their disastrous start to the qualifying campaign.
Speaking to 3Sports, Kingston expressed pessimism about Ghana’s chances of reaching the tournament, suggesting the country should stop focusing on qualification amid the challenges facing the national team.
“It'll be a miracle for Ghana to qualify to the 2027 AFCON. Let's forget about trying to qualify for AFCON,” he said.
Ghana’s qualification hopes suffered a major setback after they lost their opening two Group C matches against Ivory Coast and The Gambia.
Some people tried to kick Jordan out of Black Stars – Dede Ayew
The Black Stars began their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in Bouaké before suffering a 4-2 loss to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The results left Ghana without a point from their first two matches, putting them under significant pressure in a group that also includes Somalia.
Kingston’s comments come after Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, marking the first time in two decades that the four-time African champions had missed the continental tournament.
Ghana now face a difficult task to revive their campaign and avoid missing a second consecutive AFCON tournament.
