Ghanaian referee Derrick Kwatei Quartey has reached a significant milestone in his officiating career after earning an appointment for the 2026 Futsal Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Angola in Rabat.

Quartey was named Reserve Assistant Referee for the continental showpiece on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, marking the first major final appointment of his career.

The appointment represents an important step in his development as an official and places a Ghanaian among the referees selected for one of African futsal’s biggest fixtures.

The final was pulsating, with Morocco seeking another continental title against an Angola side hoping to make history.

Quartey was part of an officiating team led by Tunisian referee Abdelakram El Hentati.

South African official Sipho Machbeth Mahlangu was appointed Referee 2, while Cameroon’s Eric Elingui Mindjih served as Referee 3. Libya’s Mohammed Alsertawi was designated Time Keeper.

His appointment follows an earlier continental assignment in January 2026, when he was selected as Timekeeper for the Futsal AFCON qualifier between Cape Verde and Senegal.

That role involved monitoring match time, time-outs and accumulated fouls, responsibilities that demand concentration and precision in the fast-paced indoor version of football.

Morocco and Angola renew their rivalry

The final brought together two of Africa’s leading futsal nations in a repeat of the 2024 final, when Morocco emerged victorious.

The hosts reached the 2026 decider after defeating Egypt 6-0 in the semi-finals, while Angola secured their place with a 3-2 comeback victory over Algeria.

Morocco were pursuing a record fourth continental title, while Angola were aiming to win the competition for the first time.

In the end it was the Moroccans who added another star on their jersey, defeating Angola by five goals to one.
