Dwight Yorke’s interest in becoming the next Black Stars coach has brought his managerial record under scrutiny, with the former Manchester United striker hoping to turn his experience at club and international level into an opportunity to lead Ghana.

The 54-year-old has managed 35 matches across two senior coaching assignments, recording 14 wins, nine draws and 12 defeats.

Yorke’s first major managerial appointment came in 2022 when he took charge of Australian A-League side Macarthur FC.

He enjoyed a successful start, guiding the club to its maiden Australia Cup title in his debut season.

He managed 18 matches at Macarthur, winning 10, drawing two and losing six.

His spell ended in January 2023, with the club and Yorke agreeing to terminate the remainder of his contract.

Tougher assignment with Trinidad and Tobago

Yorke returned to international football in November 2024 when he was appointed head coach of Trinidad and Tobago, the country he captained at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

His second senior managerial role proved more challenging.

He recorded four wins, seven draws and six defeats across 17 matches.

Trinidad and Tobago ultimately failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, and Yorke’s tenure ended in March 2026.

Ghana job presents another opportunity

Despite the mixed results, Yorke has made clear that he wants to continue managing and is interested in the vacant Black Stars position.

In an interview with The Guardian, he argued that Ghana possesses the talent needed to succeed but requires a stronger team culture and greater commitment from its players.

“From the outside, Ghana sometimes looks disjointed. The talent is there. Build the culture and get the players to buy in and the football will follow,” he said.

Ghana are searching for a new head coach following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.
