Ranking Member of Parliament for the Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has challenged the government to account for a GH¢650 billion allocation over the past two years before introducing a proposed new economic programme requiring $10 billion.

He said the government must show what it has achieved with the resources allocated to existing economic programmes before asking Ghanaians to embrace another initiative.

In a video shared by Channel One TV on X on October 19, 2026, the Ofoase Ayirebi MP expressed concern over recent discussions by President John Dramani Mahama and Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson about a new economy expected to create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

He argued that the government had yet to fully account for its campaign promises, including the 24-hour economy, the Nkoko Nkete poultry initiative, the One Million Coders programme and the proposed Women’s Development Bank.

“It’s been two years since they were voted into power. The actual programme that contains all these details, till today, Parliament is yet to have an opportunity to debate and adopt it,” he said.

According to him, although the government has presented the programme to Parliament, it has not yet been brought to the floor for debate and adoption.

Oppong Nkrumah further questioned the number of jobs created under the existing initiatives and the number of women who have benefited from the proposed credit scheme.

“They haven’t even accounted for how many jobs they have created under the 24-hour economy, properly so-called, how many jobs they have created under Kokonke Tenkete and 1 million coders,” he stated.

The Ofoase Ayirebi MP said Parliament had approved two budgets amounting to approximately GH¢650 billion for the government to implement its economic commitments.

He argued that the government should provide a detailed account of how it used the money and the results achieved before seeking additional funding for a new economic agenda.

"We are of the view that, number one, the original programme that they campaigned on, which they were voted for, which they've brought to Parliament, which is yet to be adopted by Parliament, they should focus on and have it adopted," he said.

Oppong Nkrumah also called for a proper assessment of the existing programmes to enable Ghanaians to determine whether they have delivered on their promises.

He maintained that the proposed $10 billion initiative, which he estimated to be over GH¢110 billion, should not distract from the government's existing commitments.

“It is when that is done, and Ghanaians are satisfied, that you can then talk about potentially a new economic programme,” he added.

He urged both the governing NDC and the opposition NPP to demand accountability for the existing economic programme before discussing a new one.

"Focus on the old economic programme, its promises, the resources that have been made available to you and account for it," he said.
