Dr Adam Bonaa, Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), has disclosed that only seven new sidearms have been legally licensed to individuals in Ghana in less than two years.
Speaking on The Lowdown on GhanaWeb TV, he said the move reflects the growing awareness of the consequences of gun violence and the need to regulate firearm ownership.

“I can tell you that in the last two years, the only sidearms [new ones] that have legally been licensed to people are only seven,” he remarked.
Dr Bonaa said the figure showed that the government and state authorities have become more aware of the consequences of gun violence.
“It tells you that this administration or the state has become aware of the consequences of gun violence,” he said.
He also outlined measures being implemented to monitor firearms imported into the country.
According to him, every box of imported firearms is opened for inspection, regardless of the quantity involved, to enable authorities to check each weapon’s type and calibre.
“If there are one million boxes, we would open all of them, check each and every weapon, the calibre, what type of weapons you are bringing,” he added.
