Swedish manager Kim Lars Björkegren was chosen to lead the Black Stars as interim head coach, reportedly because most local coaches interviewed for the role failed to impress the selection committee.
According to reports, the committee tasked with finding Ghana’s next substantive national team coach, led by former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice-President Fred Pappoe, interviewed several local coaches for the interim position.
However, the reports indicated that most of the coaches interviewed struggled to impress the committee members with their responses, reducing their chances of securing the job.

The reports added that the local coaches failed to adequately outline their plans for managing the squad and implementing tactical approaches that could help the team improve its performance within a short period.
Björkegren’s performances with the Black Queens in international competitions and his experience with the Black Stars during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he served on Otto Addo’s technical staff, reportedly proved decisive in his selection for the interim role.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced that the Swedish tactician had been tasked with leading Ghana in their crucial November double-header against Somalia, with Black Stars assistant coach Godwin Attram and Ibrahim Tanko expected to assist him.
A committee comprising government and GFA representatives, led by Fred Pappoe, is said to have made the interim appointment while the search for a permanent successor continues.
The outcome of the two matches against Somalia could influence Björkegren’s future with the Black Stars, with the possibility of a permanent head coach being appointed before Ghana’s next fixtures.
