NDC communicator Alhassan Suhuyini has welcomed the representation of women on Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), noting that women now occupy five of the commission’s seven commissioner positions following the latest appointments.
He said the development was worth celebrating as part of efforts to empower qualified women and give them greater opportunities to contribute to national development.
“With this appointment, you now have five women out of seven acting as commissioners of our Electoral Commission,” Suhuyini said on JoyNews’ Newsfile.
He described the composition as a positive development for women’s participation in public institutions and commended those who had worked to promote women’s empowerment.
“For me, this speaks to the empowerment and the creation of more space for qualified women in this country to also contribute their quota to the development of this country,” he said.
Suhuyini also praised feminists and others who had advocated for women’s participation, saying the representation was an achievement they could be proud of.
"I want to celebrate all feminists. I want to celebrate all those who have worked in the space of empowering women," he said.
He added that the development was worth recognising alongside the wider debate about appointments to the commission.
