Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has outlined what Ghana expects from its next Black Stars head coach, insisting that the new appointment must involve spending more time in the country and regularly scouting players in Europe.

Ghana are searching for a successor to Carlos Queiroz, who parted ways with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after a disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Speaking in an interview with Citi FM, Adams said the government had communicated its expectations to the GFA as discussions continued over the appointment of a new coach.

“In our engagement [with the GFA], we indicated that our coach should also be interested in spending time in Ghana. You can’t have a national team coach who visits the country only when the team is coming to play a competition… then you are not a national team coach,” he said.

Adams added that the next coach should balance time in Ghana with trips abroad to monitor players, particularly those competing in Europe.

“The coach must spend more time here and maybe go to Europe to also scout there from time to time,” he added.

Meanwhile, an interim technical team is expected to take charge of the Black Stars for their double-header against Somalia in November at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana are bottom of Group C without a point after losing their opening two qualifying matches and are seeking to return to the AFCON after missing the 2025 tournament in Morocco.
