Lead counsel for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, Samuel Atta Akyea, has argued that his client poses no flight risk because his passport is in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Atta Akyea maintained that the state’s possession of the passport undermines the argument that the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman could abscond if released on bail pending appeal.

“Wontumi isn’t one to run away if given bail, he won’t go anywhere” he told reporters after today’s proceedings.

He then said he’s hopeful the Accra High Court will grant his client temporary freedom while he challenges his conviction and 20-year prison sentence for illegal mining-related offences linked to a concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.

The court took the arguments under advisement after the October 15 sitting and is expected to deliver its ruling on November 4, 2026.
