Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah was the eldest son of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah.

He was born in 1958, a year after his father led Ghana to independence.

Like his father, Gamal was committed to Pan-Africanism and international affairs. He pursued higher education at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, where he obtained a doctorate in political science.

Gamal began his career in political journalism at Al-Ahram Weekly, an English-language newspaper based in Cairo, Egypt.

He spent more than 15 years working with the newspaper and later became the editor of its international affairs section.

He was also the brother of Sekou Nkrumah and Samia Nkrumah, a Ghanaian politician and former chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the political party founded by their father.

In an old interview in 2007, Gamal revealed that he was named after former President Gamal Abdel Nasser, an Egyptian military officer and revolutionary who served as the second president of Egypt from 1954 until he died in 1970.

In a 2018 editorial, he wrote about migrants who travelled from Libya to Lampedusa, some of whom drowned or went missing at sea.
