NPP National Communications Director Dennis Miracles Aboagye has challenged claims that Emelia Afi Agbenyo became associated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) only after the party nominated Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as its running mate, insisting that her political affiliation was known during her university days.

Aboagye said Agbenyo was an active student politician at the University of Ghana between 2004 and 2008 and was widely known on campus as an NDC supporter.

He recalled that Agbenyo served as the university’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) secretary in 2008, when a person he identified as an NPP member was SRC president.

“I was at the University of Ghana between 2003 and 2007. Afi was at the University of Ghana between 2004 and 2008,” he said on Joy News.

“Afi was not a private person at the University of Ghana. Afi was a student politician. Indeed, Afi became the SRC secretary of the University of Ghana in 2008,” he added.

Aboagye argued that Agbenyo’s involvement in campus politics made her political leanings known long before her recent appointment as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

He rejected the suggestion that her association with the NDC began only when the party nominated a female vice-presidential candidate, describing that explanation as an insult to Ghanaians’ intelligence.

“If the NDC comes to tell you in 2026 that she is a consultant and an advocate and that she came to join them when the female vice president was nominated, that is the biggest insult to the intelligence of the people of this country,” he said.
