Ghana international Antoine Semenyo says overcoming difficult moments at different stages of his career has made him mentally stronger and more determined to achieve his ambitions in football

The Black Stars attacker, who now plies his trade for Premier League giants Manchester City, endured challenging periods at the beginning of his career, where he struggled for form and lost his place during spells with Newport County, Bristol City and Sunderland.

And according to Semenyo, those experiences have shaped his character, stressing that setbacks will always be part of his career.

“It’s made me, ultimately, resilient. I’m strong-minded and have strong character. Anything in the way is just a blur,” he said.

“I’m always going to be tunnel-visioned on what my goal is. If I want something, I’m going to get it eventually,” he added.

Reflecting on some of the difficult periods he experienced earlier in his career, the Ghanaian forward admitted that being left out of the team and struggling to perform tested his mentality.

“I had a lot of phases at Newport, Bristol, Sunderland where I wasn’t playing so well and I was out of the team,” he said.

“You need to be strong-minded to get through those moments. If you’re not strong-minded, you’ll fall,” he added.

The 26-year-old forward has enjoyed an impressive spell with the English giants since his arrival in January 2026, scoring 13 goals in 35 appearances, including the winner in last season’s FA Cup final.

This season, the Ghana international has scored two goals and provided three assists in eight appearances across competitions.
