Chief of Staff Dr Julius Debrah has urged more than 100 Ghanaian health workers deployed to Grenada to uphold high professional and ethical standards, warning that their conduct could determine future employment opportunities for other Ghanaians in the Caribbean nation.

Addressing the workers before their departure, Dr Debrah stressed that their qualifications might secure employment abroad, but their character would determine whether such opportunities remained available.

“Your certificate or your qualification may open the door for you, but your character will determine how long the door will be kept open,” he said.

He urged the health professionals to represent Ghana positively through their conduct and dedication to duty, noting that their performance would influence how Ghanaians are perceived in their host country.

The workers have been deployed to various medical facilities in Grenada under two-year renewable contracts to help address the Caribbean nation's shortage of skilled healthcare professionals.

The Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, also urged the workers to honour the terms of their contracts and demonstrate professionalism throughout their stay.

“Go and work well, don’t mess up. Try and raise the flag of Ghana. Be professional. Professionalism is key. This is what we expect from you,” he said.

Agyekum further encouraged the workers to return to Ghana after completing their contractual assignments.

He disclosed that the government was making progress with plans to deploy additional nurses to Germany and other Caribbean countries.

The deployments form part of the government's Labour Export Programme, which seeks to create overseas employment opportunities for Ghanaian workers while helping partner countries address labour shortages in critical sectors, including healthcare.
